From the New York State Adjutant General report regarding the 153rd NY Infantry: GRIMSHAW, JOHN E. — Age, 41 years. Enlisted, October 8, 1862, at Ellenberg, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. K, October 18, 1862; died of ulceration of stomach, September 5, 1863, at Washington, D.C.
At the age of 41, Nelson left his wife and 14 children and his farm in Ellenburg, NY, to serve his country during The Civil War. He never made it back.
