James moved to Butler, PA on May 15, 1880 and started working for Ball Engine Works. Later he went to New York City where he worked in the Garvin Machine Company for two years. He then returned to Butler and secured a position with Larkin & Company. He eventually launched his own business and founded the Wise Machine Company which manufactured oil well supplies. Among his many ventures he found the time to serve Butler as a city councilman.
He married Blanche Thompson in 1895 and had two sons, one who later became a City Controller of Butler.
He was a member of the Butler Knights of Phthias lodge, the Knights of Malta, the Butler Rotary club, the Woodmen of the World and the Second Presbyterian Church.
James died at the age of 55 of a complication of diseases with which he had been ailing for a year.
