He grew up on a farm and at an early age he started helping out on the family farm. Like his father, he was a farmer.
On March 7, 1861 in Washington County, he married Samilda Wilcox, the daughter of Absolom Carr and Mary Leonora (Barkhimer) Wilcox. Together McDonald and Samilda had 15 children.

In March 1865 he was drafted into the service. He was signed up for a year of service and placed in the 39th Regiment, Company G. He held the rank of a Private in the Union Army. He served three and a half months and was mustered out July 18, 1865.
After his short time in the service, he returned to farming. Which he continued to do up until shortly before his death.
On August 9, 1925 he died of Herpes Zoster at his residence in Liberty Township, Washington County, Ohio. He was buried 3 days later at Lawrence Cemetery. He left behind his wife of 64 years and at least 10 of their children.
