Jonathan L. Bales was the son of William Bales and Sarah Dicks. His siblings were: Nathan (1808), Bowater (1810), Elizabeth (1810), John (1814), Zachariah (1821), Eleazer (1824), and William R. (1825).

He married Edith Chandler in 1838 and had children: Levi J. (1840), Eliza Jane (1843), Sarah Ann (1849), Cynthia A. (1852), Elizabeth M. (1855), Mry Lena (1858), Zillin (1859) and Martha Rosella (1861).

He was a veteran of the Civil War having served the Union in Company K, 7th Regiment, Iowa. Enlisted Dec 2, 1861. Re-enlisted and re-mustered Jan 5, 1864. Mustered out July 12, 1865, Louisville, KY.
