Husband of Dorothy H. Datthyn who resided in Williamson, New York.

Lester served as a Staff Sergeant & Nose Gunner on B-24J "Lucky Penny" #42-110169, 853rd Bomber Squadron, 491st Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Wayne County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 13, 1943 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Married.

Lester was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 lost an engine on takeoff and crashed with 2 of their 1000 lb. bombs exploding at Metfield RAF Air Field southeast of the village of Metfield, Suffolk, England during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in Cambridge, England and was later repatriated here on April 22, 1949.

Service # 32675105

The reason Lester is named on a group headstone is because when soldiers & sailors were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.

The loss of B-24J #42-110169 went on to cause the additional loss of B-24J #44-40237 and B-24J #44-40240. None of the crew from either of these B-24's were lost. They were sitting idle at the airfield at the time.
