Ella Lavina Black, 97,died on Sunday Jan. 7, 2007 at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton. She was born July 14, 1909 at the Black Homestead Farm west of Carrollton, lllinois, the daughter of Robert T. Black and Lucy Eva (Barnett) Black.

She is survived by one niece, Helen Mills of Jacksonville and two nephews, Kent Black of Pottsboro, Texas, and Stephen Black of Edwardsville, lllinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lucy Black of Carrollton; two brothers, Thomas Black and Kenneth Black of Carrollton; and a sister Esther McClain of St. Louis, MO

She lived at the Black Homestead Farm west of Carroll ton trom 1909 until 1961 when she moved to Carrollton. She entered the Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in 1997. Ella attended Centerville country school, graduated from Carrollton High School in 1927, and then attended post graduate classes in 1927-1928. She attended lllinois State University at Normal from 1929 to 1931 and received a teaching certificate. She taught all grades at Forest Oak country school in 1933-1934 and then at Woody trom 1934-1937. She began teaching at Patterson elementary in the fall of 1937. After thirty years at Patterson and the North Greene Unit she transferred to Carrollton Grade School and taught 6th grade from 1967 to 1974 at which time she retired after 41 years of teaching. During her teaching career she had continued her education during the summers at Eastern Illinois State College, Northwestern University, Western Illinois, lllinois College, and the University of Illinois.

She was a lifelong member of the Carrollton Baptist Church, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Carrollton Business and Professional Women, Greene-Jersey Retired Teachers, East End Reading Circle, and the Centerville Club. She traveled extensively during her lifetime and visited many foreign countries in Asia, Europe, and Mica. She loved music and played the piano and organ. Her grandfather, Thomas Black, came to Greene County in 1822 from England at the age of 12 and lived at the Black Homestead Farm for the remainder of his life. Her father, Robert T. Black, also lived at that location during his lifetime. Ella lived at the Homestead for 52 years before moving to Carrollton.
