California National Guard Honorable Discharge Private in HQ Battery, 2nd Battalion, 143rd Field Artillery Enlisted July 17, 1937. Discharged July 16, 1940 at Stockton, California. He enlisted on his 16th birthday.
World War II - 20th Armored Division.
Stockton Fire Department. He served on the rescue squad and later the fire alarm station.
Dad retired in 1974 from the department when he suffered a "mild" heart attack. The heart attack was the result of smoke inhalation from a fire he fought in 1957 that damaged the left ventricle of his heart. Even though it was service related, he refused a full medical pension as it "was taking advantage of the system" and retired on a normal half pension.
In 1992, the damage had developed into congestive heart failure and after mutliple heart attacks within a matter of days, Dad passed on.
