Mrs. Dorothy Lucille Riggs Crowder was born July 25 1895 in Adams County, MS to Mr. Riggs and Mrs. Rosa Carter Riggs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. John "Dutch" Crowder and her daughter, Mrs. Gloria Crowder Rushing. She was deeply devoted to her husband and family and was a dynamic Christian lady. I often visited in her home with my father. In her latter years she grieved daily over the loss of her husband and daughter, both were taken prematurely from her. Her brother, Mr. Melvin Riggs came to live with her shortly following her husband's death in 1963. The Lord always provides for our best, for in a few short years, 1968, her daughter, who lived next door, suffered a tragic automobile accident, hit head on by a drunken driver. To the best of my recollection, she lived less than a year. The burden Mrs. Crowder bore from that time until her passing was tremendous. She did however maintain a wonderful attitude in spite of her grief. She and Mr. Crowder both loved to fish and he had dug a massive pond stocked with large bream just prior to his death. My father and I often fished weekly on Saturdays during the fall, along with Mrs. Crowder, Mr. Riggs and Mrs. Crowder's granddaughter, Donnah Rushing. We spent many happy hours fishing with them. The last time I visited Mrs. Crowder with my father, they were joking about how long they were living and how Mrs. Crowder had outlived most of her family when she said, "I'm gonna be like the old Choctaw Indian Chief, I ain't gonna die, I'm just gonna fade away." She near about did too. What a blessing was this family to me while growing up. May our dear Lord bless her memory to all of us until we meet again, one day after awhile in glory!
