A Crazed Columbus Man Slays Wife and Child and His Sister-in-Law.
COMPLETES TRAGEDY BY SHOOTING HIMSELF
Slayer, at One Time Professional Bicycle Rider, Was Doubtless Insane.
Columbus, Feb 19.- Forest Bigelow, 42, an insurance agent, decapitated his wife, Lena (Cruit) Bigelow, 34, and his daughter, Annabelle, 7, with a hatchet as they lay in bed at their home here early today and then went to the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Sally Cruit, a block away killed his sister-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Steele, 32, with the hatchet and seriously wounded Mrs. Cruit.
Returning to his home, Bigelow shot himself with a revolver and fell dead across the bodies of his wife and daughter.
Mrs. Cruit (Mrs. Sally Cruit) is in the hospital suffering from cuts about the head.
Police are unable to advance a reason for the slayings.
After murdering his wife, and his daughter, Bigelow went to his mother-in-law's home, carrying the hatchet, with which he wiped out his own family, with him. His knocks for admittance were answered by his sister-in-law (Hazel L. Cruit Steele), and he struck her down in the doorway of the home. The disturbance roused his mother-in-law from her bed and she came downstairs, and was attacked by Bigelow, after he threw the body of Mrs. Steele aside. It is thought Bigelow was of the opinion he killed her (the mother-in-law) when she fell to the floor and because of this her life was saved. Frederick Steele, four years old, saw his mother (Hazel L. Cruit Steele) killed, but was not noticed by Bigelow and escaped the hatchet. He was found wandering around the home by neighbors, crimson with blood from his mother's body. He had tried to stop the flow of blood from the wounds caused by the fiend. He was the only member of the two households to escape.
The slayings were premeditated, it is thought for the telephone wires at both his home and the home of his wife's relatives had been cut.
Bigelow and his wife are said to have separated about two years ago but recently effected reconciliation. Mrs. Bigelow called at the office of Police Prosecutor Kennedy a few days ago, and asserted she thought her husband was insane. She declared he had burned part of her clothing.
Bigelow, whose former home was in Madison County and who at one time was a professional bicycle rider, had been ordered to appear at the office of the police prosecutor this afternoon.
