George Gillespie fought throughout the entire Revolutionary War. Most notably, he was in the Battle of King's Mountain on October 7, 1780 and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781 under General Nathaniel Green.
Sometime between 1772 and 1792, he moved his family into Tennessee, where he established a claim to a government grant awarded to him for his service in the Revolutionary War. This grant is located in what is now Sumner and Williamson counties. George Gillespie built his home in Sumner County while his son, George, Jr., built his own home in Williamson County. The grant was made in 1792 but the claim in Williamson County was not registered in Franklin, Tennessee until 1807.
