Alexander Coleman was born 26 March 1827 in Hickman County, Tennessee and died 26 October 1903 in Collingsworth County, Texas and was buried at Dozier Texas. Hickman County records show that James Grimes was guardian of Alexander after the death of his mother, with final settlement made with Alexander through his agent, Thomas J. Harrington, his uncle, on 1 August 1850. Alexander was in Texas at this time and had served in the Mexican War, according to his daughter Julia Muse. He also served in the Civil War while a resident of Grimes County where he had lived for some time. The 1850 Grimes County shows him to be an unmarried man living with the Dodd family to whom he was related on both sides. His first marriage was to Mary Ann McCune in Grimes County 5 September 1854. They had 5 children. She died 16 May 1863,
He married again 23 December 1866 at Anderson, Grimes County to Sallie Jean Foster, born 17 April, 1837 in Kentucky. She died 1 February 1904. They had 9 children.
About 1870 the family moved to Marlin, Falls County, Texas where they lived at 'Rock Dam' Crossing for some years, then shortly after 1876 they went to Eastland County, but by 1882 they were in Montaigue County, Spanish Fort, Texas and later to Memphis, Hall County, Texas until the spring of 1903, they went to neighboring Collingsworth County to be near some of their children who were living there. It was there he died in a gun accident.
Alexander was a successful rancher and was said to be well-to-do. His daughter Julia Muse supplied the above information.
