Alexander Coleman and his brother James, were the second of three sets of twins born to Enos and Mary [Polly] Harrington Coleman. There were four singles births in the family also. Enos and Polly lived in Hickman County, Tennessee until their deaths in 1831 and 1840. The children scattered as they grew up. Alexander went to New Orleans, Louisiana where he joined Capt. Hyman's Co. [G] 5th Regiment [Peyton's] Louisiana Mil. Inf., 24 May 1846 as a private in the U.S.-Mexican War. He was mustered out 17 August 1846. After this venture we find him in Grimes County, Texas, an unmarried man on the 1850 census roll. The 1860 census shows him to be married to Mary Ann McCune they were married September 4,1854 in Grimes County, Texas. They have four children; James M., John S., Sally W., Ellen C. Mary Jane [Molly] was born January 3,1861. She died sometime before she was to be married. Mary Ann died May 16,1863 and is buried in Grimes County. Alexander married Sally Jean Foster at Anderson in Grimes County December 23,1866. Nine children were born of this marriage. All are recorded in the Family History, Time Marches On. Between the two marriages, Alexander served as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War, leaving his five motherless children in the care of Negro slaves and his sister Calidonia Lancaster,and from several accounts, they were not very well cared for. Around 1870 Alexander and Sally Jean moved to Falls County, near the present town of Marlin. Then a short stay in Eastland before moving to Spanish Fort in Montague County. It is here that Dea Coleman Allison, their last child is born. They later moved to Memphis in Hall County, Texas. Every move took them farther west and north as cattlemen were inclined to do. Their last was to Dozier in Collingsworth County in 1903, to be near several of their children. Alexander loved to hunt, an on October 26,1903 as he was returning home from hunting, his gun discharged as he was climbing through a fence,ending a long and eventful life.



Alexander Coleman was born 26 March 1827 in Hickman County, Tennessee and died 26 October 1903 in Collingsworth County, Texas and was buried at Dozier Texas. Hickman County records show that James Grimes was guardian of Alexander after the death of his mother, with final settlement made with Alexander through his agent, Thomas J. Harrington, his uncle, on 1 August 1850. Alexander was in Texas at this time and had served in the Mexican War, according to his daughter Julia Muse. He also served in the Civil War while a resident of Grimes County where he had lived for some time. The 1850 Grimes County shows him to be an unmarried man living with the Dodd family to whom he was related on both sides. His first marriage was to Mary Ann McCune in Grimes County 5 September 1854. They had 5 children. She died 16 May 1863,

He married again 23 December 1866 at Anderson, Grimes County to Sallie Jean Foster, born 17 April, 1837 in Kentucky. She died 1 February 1904. They had 9 children.

About 1870 the family moved to Marlin, Falls County, Texas where they lived at 'Rock Dam' Crossing for some years, then shortly after 1876 they went to Eastland County, but by 1882 they were in Montaigue County, Spanish Fort, Texas and later to Memphis, Hall County, Texas until the spring of 1903, they went to neighboring Collingsworth County to be near some of their children who were living there. It was there he died in a gun accident.

Alexander was a successful rancher and was said to be well-to-do. His daughter Julia Muse supplied the above information.
