British Artist. He studied art at Chelsea Polytechnic from 1936 under Harold Williamson and Raymond Coxon. His studies were interrupted by World War II, when he served with the Royal Armoured Corps. After the war he taught at Kings College, Newcastle University, the Royal College of Art, and the City and Guilds of London Art School. He was primarily a landscape painter, working in the open air in the summer and reworking his canvases indoors in the winter. He held his first solo exhibition at the Agnew Gallery in1954, his work was later exhibited at the Tate Gallery, London and the Queensland Gallery in New South Wales, Australia. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1969 and was treasurer from 1976 to 1984. He became president in 1984, serving until 1993. He was knighted in 1991 and the Royal Academy held a memorial show of his work after his death.
