According to the National Archives and Records Administration's "Registers of Deaths of U.S. Volunteers, 1861-1865", William Free of Co. A, 38th Indiana Infantry, died April 1, 1865 at the 1st Div., XIV Corps hospital in Raleigh, NC of chest wounds received at the Battle of Bentonville, NC in March 1865. His mother Mary applied for a federal pension on July 25, 1890 (app. #459,083; cert. #341,192 - Indiana).

Free was born @1847 to parents John M. Free (1813-1894; born in OH) and Mary Sanders (1818-1902). His known siblings include: Leander (b. @1842; also served in Co. A, 38th Indiana Infantry), Cynthia A. (b. @1844), Hannah (b. @1845), Thomas (b. @1848), Elizabeth (b. @1851), Isaac (b. @1853), John (b. @1855), and Amos (b. @1858).
