On May 25, 1940, Don married his college sweetheart, Rita. They adopted two children, Steven and Nancy. They shared 62 years of good marriage until Rita passed away in 2002.
Don was employed as a research chemist by Dupont and Amoco (American Oil Company) holding such positions as Senior Chemist in the Research Department and then promoted to Chemical Laboratory Supervisor. Due to Don's employment, the couple lived in various locations over the years, Cleveland, Ohio, Tulsa, Okla, Brownsville, Texas, and Joliet, Ill.
Both Don and Rita enjoyed traveling. While living in Joliet, Rita began an adventure of selling World Book Encyclopedia. By the end of the first year, Rita earned a trip to Jamaica for herself and Don. Rita worked up to District and Regional Manager for World Book. During those years with World Book, Don and Rita traveled to Spain, England, Portugal, Greece, and three times to Hawaii.
Don and Rita also had the opportunity to accompany their minister on a pastoral exchange to the "down under." Spending that summer in Australia was a lifetime highlight.
On Aug. 17, 1997, they moved to Hutchinson and joined Mennonite Retirement Community where they have had many happy times with their friends. Don was a member of Trinity Methodist Church of Hutchinson, where he and Rita attended the Doers Sunday School Class.
Son Steven, daughter-in-law Leslie, and their children, Parker and Spencer of Sacramento, Calif; his daughter, Nancy and her children, Jerry, Justin and Kristen; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
Don is laid to rest beside Rita in the Bayard Cemetery of Deer Creek, Grant County, Okla. This cemetery is located just two miles south of the homestead site of Rita's father, Ephraim Lawless.
