Donald George Cain, was born Nov. 25, 1915, to Charles and Flora Cain in Omaha, Neb. He departed this life at Mennonite Retirement Community on Jan. 30, 2006, at the age of 90 years and two months.

While attending Park College near Kansas City, a young lady named Rita Lawless took a chemistry class where she met a lab technician, Don Cain. The chemistry between them began with several dates. Don graduated from Park College in 1937, and went on to get his Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska in 1939. After Rita graduated, she worked as a cashier from 1938 to 1940 at the Myron Green Restaurant and lived with her sister and brother-in-law in Kansas City while waiting for Don to graduate.

On May 25, 1940, Don married his college sweetheart, Rita. They adopted two children, Steven and Nancy. They shared 62 years of good marriage until Rita passed away in 2002.

Don was employed as a research chemist by Dupont and Amoco (American Oil Company) holding such positions as Senior Chemist in the Research Department and then promoted to Chemical Laboratory Supervisor. Due to Don's employment, the couple lived in various locations over the years, Cleveland, Ohio, Tulsa, Okla, Brownsville, Texas, and Joliet, Ill.

Both Don and Rita enjoyed traveling. While living in Joliet, Rita began an adventure of selling World Book Encyclopedia. By the end of the first year, Rita earned a trip to Jamaica for herself and Don. Rita worked up to District and Regional Manager for World Book. During those years with World Book, Don and Rita traveled to Spain, England, Portugal, Greece, and three times to Hawaii.

Don and Rita also had the opportunity to accompany their minister on a pastoral exchange to the "down under." Spending that summer in Australia was a lifetime highlight.

On Aug. 17, 1997, they moved to Hutchinson and joined Mennonite Retirement Community where they have had many happy times with their friends. Don was a member of Trinity Methodist Church of Hutchinson, where he and Rita attended the Doers Sunday School Class.

Don will be missed by his son Steven, daughter-in-law Leslie, and their children, Parker and Spencer of Sacramento, Calif; his daughter, Nancy and her children, Jerry, Justin and Kristen; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, and his sister, Margaret.

Don will be laid to rest beside Rita in the Bayard Cemetery of Deer Creek, Grant County, Okla. This cemetery is located just two miles south of the homestead site of Rita's father, Ephraim Lawless.

Memorial service will at 2:30 pm Wednesday at Mennonite Manor Chapel, South Hutchinson, with the Rev. Nick Warner presiding. Friends may sign the register Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Mennonite Manor Resident Care Fund, in care of the funeral home.
