Velma Mae "Toots" Akers, age 94 of Lawrenceville and formerly of Bridgeport, passed away at her home on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.

She was born May 6, 1924 in Lawrence County to Marshal and Clara Patterson. Velma married Wayne Akers, and he preceded her in death in April of 1995.

She attended the Bridgeport Free Methodist Church, was a member of Eastern Star, was a loving homemaker to her family, worked for many years as the head of housekeeping at the Bridgeport Nursing Home, and later worked as a cook at Lou’s.

Velma is survived by her two daughters, Pam Varner and Lisa Akers, and one sister, Pauline “Shine” Updike, all of Lawrenceville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshal and Clara Patterson; her three brothers, Eldon “Dean” Patterson, Charles “Jake” Patterson, and Glenn “Bud” Patterson; and one sister, Violet “Dode” Stoltz.

A graveside service will be held for Velma Mae Akers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Petty Cemetery. Cunningham Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
