Rhode Island Governor from 1875 to 1877. Henry Lippitt, in addition to serving as governor of Rhode Island, was the ancestor of several governors and congressman from that state, including his sons, grandson, great-grandson, and a great-great-grandson. He served as Lieutenant Colonel of the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery. During the Civil War, he was Commissioner of Providence County, enrolling and drafting soldiers as called for by Abraham Lincoln. He owned several textile mills, a bleaching and dying company, was a president or vice president of several Rhode Island banks, and was an officer in a number of other manufacturing and land-related businesses. He succeeded a republican in the office of governor, was a Republican himself, and was then succeeded by another Republican.
