Mrs. Leona Elizabeth Spann Ward, 89, of Drexel, N.C. passed away on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Grace Hospital following a period of declining health.
Leona was born on Sept. 7, 1919 in Caldwell County to the late Melvin Otis Spann and Anna Flowers Spann.
She was a member of Zion Road Baptist Church and was retired from Valdese Manufacturing where she worked as a winder for many years.
Survivors include three sons, Earl Ward and his wife, Blenda, of Valdese, Larry Ward and his wife, Joyce, of Newton and Cecil Ward and his wife, Kathy, of Connelly Springs; one daughter, Barbara Huffman and her husband, Dennis, of Morganton; one son-in-law, Wayne Poteat of Morganton; two brothers, Richard Spann of Connelly Springs and Paul Spann of Granite Falls; one sister, Mabel Ward of Granite Falls; and seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Ward; one son, Junior Ward; one daughter, Mary Poteat; three brothers, G.W. Spann, Garland Spann and Howard Spann; and five sisters, Verna Barber, Ruth Hefner, Edith Erwood, Inez Turnmire and Elsie Spann.

Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
