He was a Mason.

He served in the Confederate Army where he was a forage master for General Forrrest. The Brown family dug a hole under the front porch and hid their valuables in the hole and covered it with dirt.

MR. JOHN BROWN, one of the most highly respected citizens of Gandies Cove, died very suddenly on Monday, November 10th. He was the leading citizen of his vicinity in the respective walks of life.
