He was the son of David Skeels Jr. (1779-1854) and Martha Greene (1784-1868) of Highgate, Franklin, VT. In 1843, he married Marcia Elizabeth Wait (1826-78) and they had 8 children. At the age of 43, Edwin enlisted on 2 May 1861 into Co. A, 1st Vermont Infantry and mustered out on 15 Aug 1861. At the age of 46, he enlisted again on 31 Dec 1863 into the 10th Vermont Infantry and fought at the Battle of Monocacy at Frederick, MD. It was known as the "Battle that saved Washington" on 9 Jul 1864. He was taken prisoner and with his fellow soldiers they were taken to Danville, VA where he died 3 months later on 11 Oct 1864 of disease in horrible conditions.
