Art Collector: Sister to industrialist Moses H. Cone and Claribel Cone. She was an heir to one of the greatest fortunes in early 20th century America. Etta Cone is remembered for her collection of early impressionist and French art. Her collecting of art began while living in Paris France. She was friends with Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. She was especially close to the brother of Gertrude Stine for developing her taste in in modern artwork. Following the death of her sister Claribel she continued to add to the collection. Until her death her sister's apartment in the same building was maintained with every spare space of the walls covered in early impressionist and modern art. She continued to amass the large collection till the time of her death. She was especially close to Henri Matisse and carried on a long correspondence with him. The Cone Art Collection consist of more than 3,000 works of art. It is divided between the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. The value of the collection is estimated to be worth more than 1 Billion Dollars.
