Son of William and Johanna Mooney, of Liverpool; husband of Robina (Bena)Josephine Mooney (nee Costello), of Kensington, Liverpool.

He was air gunner on 138 Sqn Halifax II Bomber BB364 NF-R operating from RAF Tempsford, Bedfordshire. They were on a container dropping exercise over RAF Henlow Airfield, when in poor weather conditions they collided with the brick chimney of Arlesey Brickworks, SE of Henlow, killing all on board.

His friend and fellow crew member Sgt AG Cyril Addison Kidd was also killed in the aircraft, he is buried in Kirkdale cemetery, Liverpool.
