He entered service in the US Navy on 15 April 1970 and retired on 21 August 1986. He retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief Machinist Mate, after 16 years of service. He served in the US Navy Submarine corps serving on three submarines. He was a crew member of the USS Francis Scott Key Submarine - SSBN675, serving on the Gold crew from 1976 to 1977 as a MMCS in the M-division; He also served on the USS Daniel Boone - SSBN629; and the USS John C Calhoun - SSBN630. He also served as a recruiting coordinator for the state of North Carolina. He earned and received the highest award given a Navy petty officer - The Navy Commendation Award, for meritorious service. He left this earth to early after a courageous 4 year battle with kidney cancer. Chuck was a man of tremendous faith. He put up a great fight.
He is the husband of Nancy Winkelman-Cashion, and father of Melanie Isabell Cashion and Charles Edwin Cashinn. He is the son of Charles and Hazel Cashion. He is the brother to Susan Keith and Barry Cashion.
