Melvin Otto Millmaker, 53, of Yuma, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2005 at his home. Melvin was a loving husband of 34 years to childhood sweetheart, Diane G. Millmaker, devoted father to Christopher J. (Maria) Millmaker, and son of Melvin E. (Lydia) Millmaker. He was Grandpa to Sheridan, Chandler, and Demi.

Born in Lebanon, Missouri , Melvin travelled extensively with his parents, as a child from a retired military family. He graduated from Frankfurt American High School in Germany.

Mel and Diane were married in 1972 at the Yuma Proving Ground Chapel. Mel entered active service with the Army. Over the course of 20 years of dedicated service in the military, he was a Tank Instructor at Ft. Knox, a recruiter, and served border duty between East and West Germany. He served as a SFC, Master Gunnery Sgt. , and participated in the liberation of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm with 11th ACR.

Following the war, he was the Battalion Maintenance NCOIC at Ft. Hunter Liggett. Among many decorations, he was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, and Recruiter Badge. After a prosperous career in the military, ECIII at Yuma Proving Ground was fortunate to obtain his dedicated services in the capacity of Test Operations Manager. For 11 years he ran the testing operations of military track and wheeled vehicles, where he was loved and admired by his coworkers and employees.

Pops was a rough tough tanker, and big ole teddy bear. He had a love for motorcycles and rode his sporty to Sturgis. He had a fascination for tanks and a talent for modeling military vehicles on a small scale. Everyone enjoyed hearing his endless war stories and he had a passion for video games.

Melvin is survived by his parents, wife, son, and 3 grandchildren.

On Friday, June 24, 2005, family and friends are invited to attend a final farewell at 10 a.m. at Sunset Vista Funeral Home and Cemetery, 11357 E. 40th St., Yuma. After graveside services, a luncheon will be held for all at the Morningside Southern Baptist Church, 2900 S. 8th Avenue.
