While she was an honor student at Sam Houston High School, Gay Ferguson worked nights as an "elevator girl" at the Warwick Hotel in Houston. There she met Judge James Elkins, who provided scholarships for needy students, and gave her a scholarship to attend Rice University. She married James Wesley Topping on August 3, 1932, in Garland County, Arkansas. She retired from Westinghouse Electric Corp., and after living in Baltimore, Maryland, from 1931 to 1976, and after the death of her husband, she moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Fascinated by her family's history, she left her genealogical record on her headstone so other family members could gain membership in the D.A.R. and the Colonial Dames of XVII Century.
