Fannie McAlister, Daughter Of Pioneers, Dies at 89

Fannie McAlister, the last of the 11 children of pioneers Charles Walker Young and his wife, died in Eugene Saturday.

Mrs. McAlister would have been 90 on May 12. She was born in 1876 on a site now occupied by the Oakway Golf Course in Eugene.

Her brother, Cal Young, who died in 1957, lived in Eugene all of his life and was for years prominent in community affairs.

Her husband, F.M. [Frank N.] McAlister, was an early-day banker in the Eugene area. He died in 1935.

Mrs. McAlister's parents crossed the plains in a covered wagon in 1852, shortly after their marriage. Her grandfather, the Rev. Jacob Gillespie, for whom many places in the Eugene area are named, led the train from Independence, Mo.

Gillespie was the first Presbyterian minister in Lane County. He was a circuit rider.

Mrs. McAlister died at Sunset Nursing Home in Eugene. Funeral arrangements are pending at England Funeral Home.

She is survived by six nieces and a nephew. The nieces are Mary (Mrs. Clyde) Wright, 2117 Olive Street, Eugene; Helen Gerlinger, Dallas, Ore., Ruth Webb, Dawson Creek, British Columbia; LaVelle Gilbert, Hamden, Conn. [sister-in-law of A.C. Gilbert, inventor of the toy Erector Set]; Nellie Allen, Bellingham, Wash.; and Mrs. Russell Southworth, Duluth, Minn. The nephew is Ford Young, Belize, British Honduras.

McALISTER – Fannie McAlister of 724 Pearl passed away March 26, 1966. She was born May 12, 1876 on the C.W. Young Donation Land Claim near Eugene. She married Frank McAlister in 1902. He preceded her in death in 1934. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Mildred Folts. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Ladies of the Elks. Survived by several nieces and a nephew. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 30, 1966 at 1:30 p.m. in the ENGLAND FUNERAL HOME, Pearl at 18th. Reverend Walter Gray officiating with interment West Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
