DR. J.J. SMOOT
Dr. J.J. Smoot, 82, years of age and an outstanding figure in the community life of this section, died shortly after midnight Friday night at his home northeast of Bethel. He had been in poor health for the past year, becoming bedfast two weeks ago.
Born March 21, 1847, near Emerson, Marion County, Missouri, he was the son of Rev. Josiah and Harriet Whitaker Smoot. At the age of nine, the death of his father threw him upon his own resources. He was forced to work as a laborer to procure funds for his schooling and thereby fitting himself to the profession of teaching.
For several years he taught school and in 1872 entered the college of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk, Iowa. Three years later he graduated from the school with high honors and a year later began his practice. In April of that year upon the death of Dr. McCullough, Dr. Smoot began his practice which continued until ill health forced him to retire from active practice. Always at the beckon of the sick and suffering, Dr. Smoot gained in prominence and won himself a place in the hearts of people of this community.
On September 18, 1877, he married Mollie W. Wilson, who with two children preceded him in death several years ago. Five other children born to this union survive him. He was married a second time to Miss Louisa Nichol on January 5, 1922. He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church and was Deacon in that church at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. L. M. Smoot of Shelbyville and Mrs. Alice Taylor of Bethel, and three sons, Edward M. of Shelbyville and Grover and Lester Smoot of Bethel and a sister, Miss Abbie Smoot of Bethel.
Funeral services for the highly respected old gentleman were conducted at 2o'clock Monday afternoon from Shiloh Baptist Church by Rev. A.N. Wilkinson..
