Was a veteran of the Civil War and served in Company G of 41st Regiment of Georgia Volunteers Stovalls Brigade as a Sergeant, CSA. He was injured two different times while serving in the war. On October 8th 1862, at a battle in Perryville Kentucky, he was shot in the left knee, the ball bursting the kneecap which weakened the knee that he needed to use a stick while walking. On July 22, 1864, at a battle in Atlanta Georgia, he was wounded by a ball striking the right arm just below the shoulder, breaking the bone rendering the arm essentially and substantially useless.
