Ira M. Barnes was a sixteen year old farmer when he enlisted in the military on 1 Aug 1862 at Chelsea, VT. He was described as six feet tall, with a light complexion, blue eyes and sandy hair. He rested in bed 909 at Fairfax Seminary Hospital in Virginia, and died from ulceration of the bowels, which he contracted while in the line of duty. He was unmarried when he died. His parents were Ira J. Barnes (d. 20 Sep 1861) and Martha W. Goodwin, married 4 Jun 1829 in Orange County, VT. Martha applied for a pension after her son's death.
