Dr. Lewis A. Drummond

Arden - Dr. Lewis A. Drummond, 77, of Glen Cove Drive, Arden, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center.
A native of Dixon, Ill., he was son of the late Wendell and Elsie Newberry Drummond. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Dr. Drummond received his A.B. degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., his B.D. degree, and his Th. M. degree from Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He received his Ph.D. degree in philosophy from Kings College, University of London, in London, England. He received his Doctoris Honoris Causa from the University of Bucharist, in Bucharest, Romania, and his Postdoctoral Studies at Spurgeon s Theological College in London, England.

He was an ordained Baptist minister having served churches in Alabama, Texas and Kentucky for 16 years. Dr. Drummond taught in Spurgeon s Theological College in London, England, and had the first full Professorship of Evangelism in Europe. He served as the Billy Graham Professor of Evangelism and director of the Billy Graham Center, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Louisville, Ky., from 1973 to 1988. He was Professor at Large at the University of Croatia of Zagreb and Professor at the University of Bucharest in Bucharest, Romania, a Professor Extraordinaire, Baptist Seminary, in Bucharest, Romania. From 1988 to 1992 he served as president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest. He was a Billy Graham Professor of Evangelism, Church and Growth, an Honorary Professor of Evangelism at Emmanuel Baptist Institute in Oradea, Romania, and an Honorary Professor of Evangelism at Baptist Theological Seminary in Warsaw, Poland. He was most recently the Evangelism Professor in Residence and Chancellor of Schools of Evangelism at the Billy Graham Training Center.

Dr. Drummond had many books published. Among them were The Life and Ministry of Charles G. Finney , The Prince of Preachers, The Life and Ministry of Charles H. Spurgeon , The Evangelist: The Ministry of Billy Graham in Historical Perspective and The Canvas Cathedral . He also had various scholarly articles published in many journals. Dr. Drummond delivered lectures and messages to seminaries, colleges and universities on every continent around the world.

The recipient of many awards, among them included the Charles G. Finney Award 2003 from the Academy for Evangelism in Theological Education and the Billy Graham Training Center Evangelism Award in 2003.

Dr. Drummond served on the Founding Committee on Evangelism and Education for the Baptist World Alliance since 1960.

As an avid pilot he earned a commercial and instructor pilot s licenses.

Surviving Dr. Drummond is his wife of 53 years, Betty L. Drummond.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest. Dr. Bart Neal, the Rev. Julian Motley, the Rev. Sheldon Alexander and Dr. Denton Lotz officiated. The family received friends following the service in the President s Room at the Seminary.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, in the Chatlos Memorial Chapel at the Billy Graham Training Center in Asheville.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Dr. Lewis A. Drummond Evangelism Scholarship fund in care of Baptist World Alliance, 405 N. Washington St., Falls Church, VA 22046 or to the Dr. Lewis A. Drummond Evangelism Fund in care of Billy Graham Training Center, P.O. Box 19223, Asheville, NC 28815.
