James Lewis Powell was the son of Wiley Powell and Maria Adkins Powell. He was born about 1842. James entered the Confederate Army along with father Wiley, and brother William Joseph Powell. All three enlisted in the 38th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Company F. James Lewis was believed to have been wounded during the Seven Days Battles near Richmond, Virginia, in June and July 1862, at either the Battle of Gaines Mill or the Battle of Savage Station, Virginia. The record is not clear. He was sent home to Elbert County, Georgia and remained there until his death on Oct. 9, 1863.

All three members of the Powell family perished during the war. Brother William Joseph Powell was killed during the battle of Gettysburg and father Wiley Powell died of tuberculosis in a Confederate Army hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1864.
