Ruth Elsie Taggart Dowd, 96, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Craig Methodist Retirement Center Chapel with Doug Dowd officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Ruth was born Sept. 26, 1912, in Boise City, Okla., to Charles and Josephine Taggart. She was raised on a homestead in the Oklahoma Panhandle outside Boise City, the middle of three daughters. She graduated from high school in Goodwell, Okla., and attended college at Panhandle A&M in Goodwell in the 1930s. She then moved to Amarillo about 1935 for medical treatment for her eyes.

Ruth Elsie Taggart married Martin Edward Judd on Dec. 24, 1937, in Amarillo, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 10, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio. Their son, Martin Edward Judd Jr., was born Oct. 25, 1938, in Elkhart, Kan.

She married Walter Dowd in August 1955 in Amarillo, and Walter preceded her in death in February 1978 in Amarillo.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Pearl Taggart and Martha Elizabeth Taggart.

Survivors include a son, Martin Judd and wife Patricia of Winona, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Barbara Leonard and husband Jim of Lake Almanor, Calif.; a stepson, Doug Dowd and wife Sue of Englewood, Colo.; five grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
