She was active in school in a variety of activities. Janet was known by many for her lovely soprano voice. After graduating from Milbank High School, she was employed as a bookkeeper at C.E. McGowan Lumber Company in Milbank.

In 1950 she began dating Tom Adler. The couple was united in marriage on October 3, 1953, in Manhattan, KS. Tom was serving as a clarinetist in the United States Army at Fort Riley. In 1954 they moved to Fort Eustis, VA. Janet worked as a clerk for the Superintendent of Schools in Williamsburg, VA. That same year Tom was transferred to Fort Mason near San Francisco. Tom was discharged from active duty in 1955 and the couple returned home to the family farm. Janet was a mother and homemaker. In 1970 she began working at Milbank Insurance Company as an insurance clerk. She worked there until her retirement in 1992.

Janet's children and grandsons were her greatest joy. She and Tom never missed their school events. She continued to attend school events long after her children had graduated. Janet began singing in public when she was nine years old. As a teenager she began singing in the Adult Choir at the First Methodist Church (Parkview). She sang with the choir for over thirty years. Janet was a member of the Merry Mrs. Extension Club. She enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished seamstress.
