TICONDEROGA -- Thomas William Malaney, 88, of Champlain Avenue, passed away quietly into the arms of his Lord on Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, after his family had gathered by his side.
Born Dec. 3, 1919, in Ticonderoga, he was the son of the late William John and Mary Maude (Thibault) Malaney.
Tom enjoyed golfing with his boys and wife, dining out, going downtown and was always the life of any gathering. He was well known around town and loved to engage with those he crossed paths with.
Tom graduated from Ticonderoga High School in 1937 and Albany Business College in 1939 and spent his entire career involved in business.He managed the National Army Store in Ticonderoga for many years before he was appointed business manager and clerk for the Ticonderoga School District.
Active in the community, he served as village trustee, deputy mayor and founder and first president of the Ticonderoga Little League, a PER of the Elks, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Ticonderoga Golf Corporation, Moses-Ludington Hospital, Ticonderoga Central Schools and St. Mary's Church and a volunteer for PRIDE.If his services were needed anywhere, he was always available.
He was a recipient of PRIDE's Outstanding Service award in 1995 and in 2005 was honored as one of the first recipients of a Distinguished Alumni award presented by the Ticonderoga Alumni Association.
Tom proudly served his country from 1942 to 1945, during World War II. He received numerous service medals, most importantly two Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf clusters.He seldom spoke of the time he spent overseas, but it was clear that he was very proud, not of his actions, but of those he served with. He was discharged as a staff sergeant, 3rd Co. 417th Infantry, 76th Division, U.S. Army.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Aldevah Jenkins and Rayadene Grinnell.
A devoted husband, he is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Hopkins) Malaney, with whom he enjoyed 61 years of marriage. A loving father, he is survived by his seven children, Patty Price and Frank of Ticonderoga and their children, Brian Price, Erica Harrington and Scott Price; Tommy Malaney and Betsy Baxter of Ticonderoga, daughter-in-law, Debra Malaney and their children, Aidan Yates and Thomas Malaney; Colleen Audet and fiance Tom Rainone of Marlton, N.J., and her children, Rebecca Gallagher and Matthew Audet; Carolyn Andersen and Mike of Ticonderoga and their children, Jarad Andersen, Jayna McLoughlin and Joel Andersen; Billy Malaney and Sally of Dallas, Texas, and their children, Luke Malaney, Claire Malaney, Logan Malaney, Mark Iverson and JT Tilelli; Tim Malaney and Frances of Ticonderoga and their daughter, Kaleigh; Ann Malaney of Albany and her children, Randy Pigeon, Shawn Pigeon, Teddy Pigeon, Jesse Malaney and Patrick Malaney.He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law; cousins; and countless nieces, nephews; and their families.
Relatives and friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks 1494 of Ticonderoga will conduct a Lodge of Sorrow at 6 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Ticonderoga. The Rev. William G. Muench, pastor, will officiate.
The Rite of Committal will take place at the family plot of St. Mary's Parish Cemetery of Ticonderoga, in the spring.
