Donald Donald Braye, 74, of Marion, finished his life journey, Sunday December 28, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital, under Hospice Care, of cancer.

Life is not about the destination, but the journey. Don traveled and loved many places in his life. From his birth in Toledo, Iowa where he grew up and married the love of his live, Vaneta Starr. They lived in Colorado Springs and New Jersey, while in the Army. After the Army, they moved to Liberal, Kansas where his journey led him to work for Ideal foods and to re-connect with life long friends, who remained close friends and shared in their 50th wedding anniversary in 2006. Don's family moved to North Platte, NE then settled in Marion, Iowa in 1973.

Don took to the nation's roads by way of trucking and continues that honorable profession in some capacity for his entire life. Whether he worked for Consolidated Freightways (1969-1973), Nash Finch (1973-1992) or recently with Pharmacy Services after he "retired", he loved to drive. His belief was if you get in a car, you are ether going 200 miles or at least 2 hours, or it was not worth the trip. During his life journey he and his wife and daughter Pam saw many wonderful places and national parks. He loved camping and never met a stranger, only a new friend. He was kind hearted and wanted to talk to everyone he met. Don and his wife met many new friends during their volunteer work for the Arc of East Central Iowa, and received Volunteer Family of The Year in 2004.

Don had a strong faith that he shared through his love for his family and church.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, Vaneta; his children, Gene (Pat) Neville of Greenville, SC, Peggy (Ron) Newmire, Phil (Louanne) Neville, Pam Braye and Patricia (Steve) Cavanaugh all of Cedar Rapids. Don loved his 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Don loved his 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Don shared his journey with his sisters and brother: Edna Neville, MaryLou Wheeler (deceased), Geraldine Kroger and Harry Braye.

He was welcomed to his next journey in heaven by his parents Ed and Manie Braye, sister MaryLou and 4 brother-in-laws.

We thank all those who touched Don on his journey and we hope he in turn helped you love and care for people. We know we will all be reunited in heaven.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Marion at 10:00 AM.
