ROBERT COOPER

Civil War Veteran Answers Final Roll Call – Aged 102 Years, 11 Months and 10 Day.

Robert Cooper, born near Mount Olivet, Bracken County, Kentucky, February 22, 1817 and died in Little River, Kansas, February 2, 1920, at the unusual age of 102 years, 11 months and 10 days.

He was married to Nancy Linville in 1848. There were born to them the following children, all of whom are still living: Squire Hiram, John, Lindie and Nerva, all of Hutchinson; Williams of Parsons, Kansas and Sarah of Sterling, Kansas.

Mr. Cooper was a private in Company I, Tenth Kentucky Cavalry, from August 10th 1862 to September 17th, 1863. He was in several actions and was wounded while near Cumberland Gap, Ky.

He moved from Kentucky to Illinois in 1868 and then to Kansas in 1872. His wife died in 1879.

On October 13, 1881 he was married to Alice Downing, who, with the following children of this union, survive him: Mrs. Chas. Watson of Sterling, Kansas, Mrs. Pearl Connor of Sylvia, Kansas, Mrs. Ollie German of Burkburnett, Texas, Mrs. Ludie Hawkins of Wichita, Kansas, Mrs. Azzie Brock of Hutchinson, Kansas, Miss Eva Cooper at home, Albert, in the United States Army, Joe of McCracken, Kansas and Charlie of Hutchinson, Kansas. Albert and Charlie both saw services overseas in Siberia, having but lately returned.

Mr. Cooper was one of the early settlers in this region, taking a homestead near Little River in 1872. He lived in the present home for the last twenty-six years.

He was a member of the Christian Church since the earliest years of that denomination, having joined it in early manhood. He was a member of the same church here in Little River since the organization of that congregation here. He was also a charter member of Corner Stone Lodge No. 219, A. F. & A. M. here in Little River.

He is probably the one of our community who has reached the greatest age. It is very exceptional for a man to reach the advanced milestone of 102 – nearly 103 – years. He was a man of unusual vitality also, as only last summer he raised an extensive garden and has lived a very active life.

The funeral was held at the Christian Church at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Albert Ayers of the Methodist Church officiating. The services were in charge of Corner Stone Lodge, A. F. & A. M.

Burial was at Bean Cemetery.

From his funeral program. Provided by Young Historical Library, 201 Main Street, P.O. Box 126, Little River, Kansas 67457.
