Sylvester St John was born on April 27, 1818 in Canada West- an English speaking community. His father Harvey St John b1797 was 21 and his mother Catharina Rittenburg St John was just 20. At this writing it appears that he had two known brothers we're unsure about his sisters. His younger brother was Harvey Nelson St John b1840. It appears his father was from the Connecticut branch of the St John's. His mothers linage is more well known as she is part of the Van Dusen line from which we are descended. He lived in Canada and married Sarah Kingsford Pound in 1842. By 1870 he was living in Orange, Ionia Co, Michigan where my G/grandfather George (see below) & my grandfather Robert St John were born. Altogether they had nine children in 18 years between 1843 & 1861. He died on February 24, 1886 in Orange, Ionia Co, Michigan at the age of 67 and is buried in the Tuttle Cemetery near the city of Orange.
