John B. "Buster" Slaughter, 91, of Hartshorne, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at a local nursing center. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brumley-Mills Chapel in Hartshorne with the Rev. Joseph Nelson officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of Hartshorne. Born April 21, 1917, in Haileyville, he was the son of Wassil and Mary (Kotieha) Slotta. He joined the Army during World War II and served until the end of the war, stationed in Manila, Philippines. After the war, he married Patsy Ruth Brownfield. In 1949 he went to work for the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety as a drivers license examiner and after 37 years he retired. He had lived in Muskogee for 38 years and for the past two and a half years he had lived at Beare Manor in Hartshorne with his wife, Patsy. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and particularly enjoyed spending time with his family and telling stories. He was baptized at and was a member of the St. Cyril Methodius Russian Greek Orthodox Church in Hartshorne. Survivors include his wife, Patsy Slaughter, of Hartshorne; one son, John W. Slaughter, of Eufaula; two granddaughters, Megan O'Neal, of Jenks, and Heather Ross, Beare, Del.; one grandson, John Hunter Slaughter, of Muskogee, and two nieces, Linda Kay Smith and her husband, Robert, of Hartshorne, and Carol Brown, of Hartshorne. He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Paula and Mary; a sister, Mary Slaughter, and a brother, Mike Slaughter.
