Obituary:
John M. Burden, one of the best known Civil War veterans in Wapakoneta, died early Monday morning, December 31, 1923, at the age of 86 years 3 months and 27 days. For more than three quarters of a century the deceased had been a resident of this county, being actively engaged in the lumber business for 32 years, running the Burden sawmill in this city. Mr. Burden was known among the pioneers of this country. He has been ill for a considerable length of time.
The deceased was born in Clinton county September 4, 1837, and was the eldest of eleven children born to Joshua and Mary Burden, three brothers and sisters being left to mourn his death.
At the age of two years, Mr. Burden came to this county with his family and has resided in Wapakoneta since that time. In 1860 he was united in marriage with Sarah Jane Becholt and to this union five children were born, and child haveing preceded Mr. Burden in death. Following the death of his first wife Mr. Burden was united in marriage with Miss Hannah Kantner and to this union six children were born.
Mr. Burden was a veteran of the Civil war having enlisted in Co. G. 156 OVI on May 2, 1864. He was wounded while in service and received his honorable discharge at Camp Dennison, Sept 1, 1864, having been in the service five months. During this time he was a prisioner for several weeks. Mr. Burden was an active member of ____Post __ _____ _____ many years.
Besides, his bereaved widow Mr. Burden is survived by the following children: Elsworth Burden, Fred Burden of this city. Wm. Burden of Lima, and Mrs. Lulu Tanruther of Dayton, Ohio children ofd his first marriage and Mrs. Harry Eichler, Mrs. Ed May, Arlington Burden and Gerald Burden of this city and Mrs. Charles Newmeier of Lima, children of his second marriage. Three brothers survive: Wilson Burden, Lima: Laurencillo Burden, Springfield, Ohio, and Jefferson Burden of this city. Eighteen grandchildren, 21 great grandch and three great great grandch also survive.
Funeral services will be held at the Burden home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev., J.E. Zimmerman, pastor of the First English Lutheran Church, where the deceased has for many years been a member, officiating. Burial will be made in
Greenlawn cemetery.
