Author, Motion Picture Screenwriter. An acclaimed writer of more than 100 books, he is most noted for his works of crime fiction. Among his novels which became motion picture adaptations are "The Busy Body", "The Hunter" ("Point Blank" is the movie title), "The Hot Rock", "Cops and Robbers", "Bank Shot", "Jimmy the Kid" and "What's the Worst That Could Happen?". Born in New York City, he attended Champlain and Harpur Colleges. He served in the United States Air Force before writing his first memorable novel "The Mercenaries" (1960). During his career of nearly 50 years, Westlake wrote under several pseudonyms most notably as Richard Stark. He was a three-time winner of the Edgar Award and was named Grand Master in 1993. He received an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay "The Grifters" (1990). He died from a heart attack while vacationing in Mexico.
