NORTH REDINGTON BEACH – A Clearwater man was killed and his wife critically injured when hit by a pickup truck as they walked across Gulf Boulevard last weekend.
Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jim Bordner said the incident occurred at about 9:20 p.m. June 25.
Kermit M. Ross, 86, of 1664 South Lake Ave., Clearwater, and his wife, Doris, had parked their car on the east side of Gulf Boulevard, Bordner said. They were crossing the busy highway to attend their family's annual reunion at the Sandalwood Beach Resort at 17100 Gulf Blvd.
Bordner said the couple had crossed the northbound lanes and stepped into the southbound lanes from the median when they were hit. The pickup truck that hit them was being driven by William J. Zimmerman, 75, of St. Petersburg, according to Bordner.
Ross was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg, where her condition couldn't be determined. Bordner said she had life-threatening injuries.
The incident is under investigation by the sheriff's Major Accident Investigations Team. No citations have been issued to Zimmerman who Bordner said didn't appear to have been speeding.
