Member of North Carolina state legislature, 1852; delegate to Democratic National Convention from North Carolina, 1860 and was made chairman of the NC delegation; delegate from Lincoln Co. to North Carolina State Constitutional Convention, 1861; Representative from North Carolina in the Confederate Congress, 1862-64. Methodist. He was a mentor of David Schenck (later Judge). They were law partners (Lander and Schenck) from 1860 until William Lander 's death. Married May 9, 1839 to Sarah Tillman Connor (1824-1863). Children: Samuel 3rd, Julius, Mary Agnes, Ella, William 2nd, Frank, Jasper, Clara, Warren.
