Albert Jenkins was born on Dec 10, 1814 (tombstone calculation) in Virginia, (1850-1860 census, incorrectly listed as Indiana in the 1885 census of his daughter Henrietta). He was likely born in Culpeper County, where his parents resided in both 1810 and 1820. He died Apr 21, 1874 in Geneseo Township, Henry County, Illinois at the age of 59.

He married Mary Ann (Polly) Lockhart on Apr 28, 1834 in Virginia, likely Rappahannock County, where both sets of parents lived. She was born Aug 24, 1816 in Virginia and died Oct 1, 1897 at the farm home of her daughter Susannah Sonner in northern Atchison County, Missouri at the age of 81. She was the daughter of David Lockhart and Tomsey Jackson.

In the 1840 census for Virginia, Rappahannock County (Roll 575, page 10), the Albert Jenkins family consisted of one male 20 and under 30 (Albert 25), two females under 5 (Matilda 4 and Henrietta Augusta 1), and one female 20 and under 30 (Mary Ann 24). Albert was engaged in agriculture.

In the 1850 census for Virginia, Rappahannock County (Roll 972, page 139-left), the Albert Jenkins family consisted of the following:

NAME AGE PROFESSION BIRTHPLACE

Albert Jenkins 33 Farmer Va
Mary A 33 "
Matilda 13 "
Henrietta 11 "
Elizabeth 9 "
Susannah 8 "
Lucy E 7 "
Rachel 5 "
William D 3 "
Jane 2/12 "

Albert Jenkins' actual age was 35, and Lucy E was 6, unless her death certificate is in error. Albert's real estate was valued at $500.

In a deed dated Aug 12, 1854, and recorded in Rappahannock County on Nov 13, 1854, Albert Jenkins and his wife Polly sold their interest in certain lands to his brother, Roland Jenkins. These lands had been held by the two in partnership. This transfer likely immediately preceeded Albert and Polly's move to Iowa. It would have been after Aug 12, 1854 and before Dec 7, 1854 when Henrietta married David Chambers in Keokuk County, Iowa.

Emma Sonner King, a granddaughter, wrote in 1928 about her grandparents' family: "There were 13 children born to their family, three boys and 10 girls. The family moved from Virginia when Susan Nurway, about the third child, was 11 years old (ca. 1854). Coming to Eastern Iowa where they remained only for a few years then moved to Henry County Illinois where grandfather Jenkins died after quite a lingering sickness."

The 1856 Iowa census for Steady Run in Keokuk ( Roll 1A_73, line 18) shows the Albert Jenkins family, family number 20, as Albert, 40, farmer, married, resident of the state for one year, born in Virginia, with the following family members, all born in Virginia: M.A., 40, Mary E., 16, Susanah, 14, Lucy E., 12, Rachel J., 10, William J., 8, Emily J., 6, Walter L, 4, and James O, 2.

Albert Jenkins' son-in-law David Lee Chambers bought 55 acres in Keokuk County, Iowa for Albert for $550. Here is a description of the transaction:

"Know all men by these presents, that I, Rachel Myers, of the County of Keokuk and State of Iowa, in consideration of the sum of five hundred and fifty dollars in hand paid by D. L. Chambers of Keokuk County, State of Iowa, do hereby sell and convey unto the said Albert Jenkins the following described premises situated in the County of Keokuk in the State of Iowa, to-wit: The Northwest quarter of the Southwest quarter except five acres in the Northwest corner of said quarter of a quarter bounded as follows: Beginning at the Northwest Corner of said quarter of a quarter and running 32 rods east, thence south 25 rods, thence west 32 rods, thence north 25 rods to the place of beginning and also the north quarter of the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter all in Section Thirty-four (34) Township Seventy-four (74) North of Range Eleven (11) West and also the North Half of the East Half of the Southwest Quarter of the Southeast Quarter of Section Thirty-four (34), in Township Seventy-four (74), North of Range Eleven (11) West, containing fifty-five acres in all and I, Rachel Myers, do hereby covenant with the said Albert Jenkins that I am lawfully seized of said premises, that they are free from incumbrance, that I have good right and lawful authority to sell the same and I do hereby covenant to warrant and defend the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever, provided always and these presents are upon this condition that whereas the said Rachel Myers hath executed to the said Albert Jenkins her promissory notes described as follows: One note of fifty dollars made payable December 25, 1859, with ten per cent interest from date and also one note calling for two hundred dollars payable on the first day of June AD 1860, with ten per cent interest from the 25 day of December AD 1858, till paid and one Note calling for three hundred dollars payable on the first day of June AD 1861 with ten per cent interest from the 25th day of December AD 1858 till paid. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of May AD 1859.
