Julia Emma was the daughter of Jeremiah Phillips, D.D.,and Hannah (Cummings) Phillips, missionaries for the Free Will Baptist church. She was one of six of their children to serve in India. She was bn in Jelasore, India, Orissa Province.
She was married to Thomas Wesley Burkholder,M.D., Nov. 8, 1879, by her brother, James Liddell Phillips, M.D., in India. She and her husband as a physician served many years in India, where he died at age 53 yrs, 2 mos. and is buried, as well as her brother, Dr. James L. Phillips, and her mother, Hannah Cummings Phillips.
Julia E. studied at Hillsdale College, Michigan, and served as missionary in India from 1865-1912, the time this information from a book was published. In Dec. of 1912, then a widow, she received a summons for help,and she sailed from N.Y, back to India to begin her fifth term, having completed already forty-five yrs service. Her father, Jeremiah, is bur. in Oak Grove, as well as sisters, Ida Orissa, Mary Anne Platt(s) and bro.-in-law, Dr. Richard Gilbert Platt(s), M.D., and other kindred.

She and Dr. Thomas W.Burkholder, had at least three children: Calder Phillips, Amy C. (Burkholder) Haight, and Hanna J. Burkholder.
Julia evidently returned from India in 1917 from transcription on her stone. In the 1930 Fed. Census, she was living with her widowed sister, Emily Marshall, in Dickinson Co. MI, at 84 yrs of age.
