Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Andrea Aiuti received his education at the Pontifical Roman Seminary, obtaining doctorates in philosophy, theology and canon law. Ordained priest in September 1871, he was named secretary to Msgr. Cesare Roncetti, Apostolic Internuncio in Brazil and later chargé d'affaires of the latter internunciature. Attached to the Secretariat for the Affairs of the Oriental Church within the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide and named Privy Chamberlain Supernumerary, he was transferred to Sacred Congregation of the Council. Successively, he was named secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Bavaria in 1879, becoming its auditor in 1882, an office he he later served in the Apostolic Delegation in India as of 1886. At the early age of thirty seven, he was appointed Apostolic Delegate in India, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Achrida on May 1, 1887, in Bombay. Back in Rome, Aiuti was named canon of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica and appointed secretary of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide, for the Affairs of the Oriental Rite on July 24, 1891. Collaborating in the preparation of the encyclical concerning the union with the Oriental Churches, he was named as Apostolic Nuncio in Bavaria on June 7, 1893, being transferred to the titular see of Damietta five days later. Named Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal on September 26, 1896 and assistant at the Pontifical Throne on January 4, 1898, Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 22, 1903, receiving the title of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni on the following November 12. The Cardinal passed away in his native city of complications related to liver disease aged 55. His body was exposed in the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini and later buried at the Campo Verano Cemetery.
