Son of Rev. Samuel Mahon and Anna Duncan, (daughter of Stephen Duncan of Carlisle), both of Pittsburgh (m. 2 June 1792, First Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, PA), David Nelson Mahon was a physician who practiced in Carlisle, PA. His brother, John Duncan Mahon (5 Nov 1796-3 July 1861), also a graduate of Dickinson College, was a prominent Pittsburgh lawyer; he is buried in in the Agnes Irwin plot at Allegheny Cemetery.

He was brought up in the households of two uncles, Judge Jonathan Walker of Bedford, PA, and James Duncan, Esq., of Carlisle.

Mahon was a graduate of Dickinson College, class of 1815, and earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1820. He served as an assistant Navy surgeon from 1821-1824 on the ship "Constellation," then returned to Carlisle to practice medicine.

He was married twice: to Elizabeth Neill, daughter of Rev. William Neill, then president of Dickinson College; she died 1838; and in 1851 to Julia Maria Montgomery, daughter of Admiral John Berien Montgomery.

With Elizabeth, two children, William Mahon and Mary Lee Mahon, who married William J. Rose; with Julia, two more children, Anna Duncan Mahon (b. 12 Apr 1858), who married U.S.N. Commander Edward Parker Wood (b. 16 Aug 1848, Mansfield, OH;d.11 Dec 1899, Washington, DC), who commanded the Petrel during the Battle of Manila Bay; and John Montgomery Mahon (b. 15 Aug 1854; d. 1945). According to the above-mentioned History of Cumberland and Adams counties, he is buried in Ashland Cemetery, but his grave has not been located, nor is it listed among burials there.
