John served as a Private, Company E, 4th Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 4th Delaware on August 11, 1862. He was noted as being a Farrier and was 32 years old.

John was wounded in the leg at Petersburg on June 18th 1864. He was admitted to 3rd division hospital in Alexandria, Virginia on July 2nd 1864 and "Died Of Wounds" (gangrene) at the hospital on July 26th 1864.
