George was the son of Adam Harpole and Lucinda Boone. His father is buried in Sursa in an unmarked grave. Although Lucinda is likely to be buried there as well, there is no documentation to verify that assumption.

George married Luella Brock Bryan on 23 Jan 1875. They were the parents of at least 5 children: Mary Myrtle, Ida, Marshall, Lepton, and Helen.

After Luella's death he remarried. His second wife was Harriet Ellen "Ellie" Oakley Bryan. She was married first to Luella's brother, John Nathaniel Bryan. Ellie and George married some time after the death of John in June 1927, and both Ellie and George were buried with their first spouses, George in Sursa, and Ellie in South Hickory Hill Cemetery in Jefferson County, Illinois.

George was a retired farmer who died at age 85.
