Arlene Sangster was born in San Bernardino, CA, daughter of Orville Sangster and Christine Begay. Her siblings were Richard Begay, Bobby Sangster, Linda Sangster, Steve Sangster, Evelyn Sangster, and Marilyn Sangster. The Sangsters and Begays were Navajo families. During WWII, Arlene's father served in the Army as a driver in the Aleutians and Europe. Later, he moved to Daggett, CA and worked as a Department of the Navy civilian heavy equipment operator at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow. Her mother had worked for the Fred Harvey hospitality chain before moving to the Barstow area. Arlene graduated from Kennedy HS in Barstow and then attended Laverne College, CA before joining the Army. She was a communications specialist, and was stationed in Brussels, Belgium. Arlene got out of the Army in 1981, worked as a hospital unit secretary in Richmond, VA and married James Stratton there in 1984. She worked at the State Department in Washington DC as a secretary for the editor of State Magazine from 1985 to 1989. She and her husband had two children. Arlene died of breast cancer in September, 1992.
