Who Rhoda's parents were is a bit of a mystery. In the 1870 census, she was next door to Jasper and Nancy (Pierce) Bryant living with her grandmother, Sarah (Grider) Bryant. The way people were listed often indicated relationships (in those censuses taken before the relationship was annotated). The family with whom Rhoda lived was listed as follows: Sarah, age 55; John, age 35; Thomas, age 25; Martha A, age 20; Rhoda, age 2; David, age 19, Henry C, age 16; Edmund, age 14; and Sarah E, age 11.
With Rhoda being age 2 and listed right after Thomas and Martha, it appears she was their child. The problem with that assumption is that David and Sarah (Grider) Bryant also had a daughter named Martha who was the same age as this Martha and she did not get married until 1875, so she still should have been living at home. So it is more than likely that Thomas and Martha were brother and sister. There is a possibility that Rhoda was Martha Bryant's child.
By 1880, Rhoda was living with Jasper and Nancy and she was indicated in the census as their daughter. Her death certificate indicates she was their daughter. There is no way to know why she was not living with them in 1870 and why she was listed as though she belonged to Martha. Perchance she was just staying with grandma and her aunts and uncles when the census was taken. Or maybe the census taker was confused.
Whatever the case, Rhoda was obviously raised as Jasper's and Nancy's daughter and therefore is linked to them as their child.
